The Pastor’s Pen
It is a joy to welcome you to this first newsletter of our newly formed Cooperative Parish. While many of us are meeting one another for the first time, we already share something important in common: a faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to see our churches thrive in the communities we serve.
In John 17:21, Jesus prayed “that they may all be one.” As we begin this new journey together, I am reminded that the Church has always been strongest when God’s people work side by side, sharing their gifts, encouraging one another, and joining together in ministry. Each congregation in our Cooperative Parish has a unique history and identity, and those gifts will help shape our shared future.
I know that any new beginning comes with questions, but it also comes with possibilities. In the weeks and months ahead, I look forward to getting to know you, worshiping alongside you, and discovering together where God is leading us. Thank you for the warm welcome you have already extended. I am excited for what lies ahead and grateful to be on this journey with you.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Katrina

Pastoral letter:
“YOU are the light of the world…Let YOUR light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your God in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14a and 16
I have been blessed to be the pastor of the Macedon Center and South Perinton United Methodist churches for the last 8 months. Both churches are welcoming, warm and joyful, a bright and shining light for Jesus Christ. Your love for Christ is obvious and infectious. You have all been a gift to me and I will miss being with you. But God’s call is persistent for me as I become the interim pastor at Canandaigua United Methodist Church and persistent for you as the churches are challenged to different kinds of ministry and worship. I am excited that the spiritual gifts and faith you have shared with me will be extended to neighbors and friends beyond the church doors. There is such
potential for discipleship in what lies before you that I pray; openness, courage and faithfulness to accept the call of Jesus in each and every one of you. I believe that God is calling you in this time of change to be the hands, feet, and voice for Christ as you live and share the Good News of resurrection and life. In other words – Be the Light of Christ!
I know Pastor Katrina, and I cannot think of anyone more blessed and gifted to lead these two congregations into the future. Please support her, and pray for her and love her as you have for me.
Thank you all – and thanks for cookies.
Peace with love,
David Underwood

JUNE 2026
Pastoral letter:
Friends,
It has been seven very quick months. June ends my interim ministry with all of you. I can’t begin to thank you for the warmth and hospitality you have given to me. You made me feel at home.
I am grateful for the work you have done in this interim time as we explored the history, identity, denominational relationship, and leadership of the churches. We have only touched on the future and probably because it is always changing. I know your Spirit and Faithfulness, and I know you will hear and heed God’s call into the future.
Please know that even as I leave Macedon Center and South Perinton at the end of this month you have touched my soul and I will continue my prayers for you.
May Jesus Christ’s richest blessings be yours.
Blessings,
Rev. David Underwood

MISSION WORK
South Perinton people have some old and new opportunities for mission work.
First, our monthly money donations on food collection day are split between Fairport, Macedon, and Williamson food pantries.
Any actual food items are usually taken to the Macedon Center Church for their food pantry.
There is a food shed in the parking lot across from the Macedon Center Church. Nonperishable food items can be taken directly there as well. It is open for donations and distribution 24/7.
Finally, Macedon Center has a shoe box program that sends hundreds of boxes with personal and health related items to various programs, including the city’s Open Door Mission. To learn how you can help and the supplies needed (including the boxes, contact Linda Zukauskas at 315-597-5113.

MAY 2026
Pastoral letter:
Friends,
There are three major holidays in the Christian church. Two of them are well celebrated and of course they are Christmas and Easter. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus and Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. The third, which in my opinion is just as important, is Pentecost and that is May 24th this year. It has been called the birthday of the church and is recorded in Acts 2. The disciples were together in crowded Jerusalem because of the harvest celebration of the Feast of Weeks, when the Holy Spirit descended on each of the disciples by wind and fire, and things changed. The ministry Jesus was now entrusted to his followers and that has extended through time to you and me. And just as the disciples spilled out on the streets speaking in the languages of the people there, that same Spirit drives the people of Christ (the Church) to speak to the people today, and that may means change. While Christ “is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow,” The world is changing and so the Church is called to bring the Gospel, the Good News into the world to meet those changes. Trusting the Holy Spirit in our lives means we get to be a part of bringing the Good News to the changing world around us, even through ministry of our two churches. I believe that these are not time to hide in a room fearfully as those ancient disciples did looking back to the “way it was.” But now is the time each and all os us called the Church to act with boldness to face the changing future with God’s own spirit setting our lives on fire for Christ. Happy Birthday Church!
Blessings,
Rev. David Underwood

News of Great Joy!
What if a single donation could provide nourishment and a source of income to a family struggling with poverty? This is exactly the question that came up during our Lenten Bible Study. Inspired and motivated by this single Biblical passage:
25Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body; what you will wear; is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Matt. 6:25-26)
It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the needs of the world, but our Bible study has found a way to make a tangible difference. We are happy to announce that collectively we have purchased through the International Heifer Project.
11 flocks of chickens. Each flock can have 10-50 chickens! (Possibilities of 550 CHIICKENS!
3 goats.
A goat isn’t just an animal; it’s a sustainable source of milk and cheese, likewise, chickens producing eggs are a continuing source of nutrition and income. Combining both, chickens and goats can surely change a family’s life forever.
I applaud this group’s passion and missional steps of faith in making a global difference, proving that, “YES,” we can be God’s hands in a hurting and wounded world.

APRIL 2026
Pastoral letter:
Friends,
April 5th we celebrate Easter. I’m certain that you have memories of Easter celebrations. There are the Easter Egg Hunts, family gatherings and the church services. I have many remembrances, but one that stands out for me came from the church that I grew up in. It seems that every year in my late teens, the choir defaulted to the same piece of music every Easter. It was a piece of music entitled “Every Morning is Easter Morning from Now On.” It became predictable, and why not? We are Easter people, we are resurrection people and that makes us the witness of Good News for difficult and confusing time. Here are the lyrics:
Every morning is Easter morning from now on!
Ev’ry day’s resurrection day, the past is over and gone!
Goodbye guilt, goodbye fear, good riddance!
Hello, Lord, Hello sun!
I am one of the Easter people!
My new life has begun!
Daily news is so bad it seems the Good News seldom gets heard,
Get it straight from the Easter People!
God’s in charge, spread the word!
Every morning is Easter morning from now on!
Yesterday I was bored and lonely;
But today look and see!
I belong to the Easter People!
Life’s exciting to me!
Every Morning is Easter Morning, by Richard Avery and Donald Marsh, 1970’s.
I think the song is a good reminder that we are an Easter possibility every day because Jesus is alive and with us every day.
Blessings,
Rev. David Underwood

4th SUNDAY OF EASTER
MARCH 2026
Pastoral letter:
Friends,
Ah, the season of Lent. Forty days not counting Sundays (there are feast days) to prepare again for Resurrection Day. It’s a time for introspection, a time for evaluations and re-evaluations of self, and to check and see how each and any of us are living a disciple’s life. There are many ways to experience Lent – more time for devotions and discipline like scripture reading, prayer and worship. There are times of volunteering and reconnecting with friends and family. And there are times for healing with the “no strings” attached love that Jesus lived and offered to others, which implies a forgiving heart for self and others.
Some people live these disciplines by fasting. Fasting doesn’t need to be only food, but could be as simple as giving up some TV time or in our culture cutting back on the internet by phone or computer. The gift of presence might find itself face to face rather than through an electronic device. If any have chosen any discipline for Lent, its purpose is to become mindful of Christ’s activity in your life and live your response.
Have a Holy Lent!

As we move into the spring the Appointive Cabinet will be working to find a pastor for our churches. In the interim, you have already provided information about who you were, and who you are, but the next step is to figure out who you want to be and so everyone is invited to participate for a couple of hours. To that end I am asking that:
Macedon Center Meet on the 28th of March (time to be determined)
South Perinton Meet on the 29th of March right after church.
Thanks for your willingness to help find your pastoral leadership through this sacrifice of time.
Blessings,
David Underwood

FEBRUARY 2026
Pastoral letter:
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
February 18th is Ash Wednesday which begins the season of Lent. As I’m sure that all of you know, it is forty days excluding Sundays which are Feast Days. The forty days are based on the scriptural account of Jesus’ time in the wilderness ending Satan’s temptations. It is a time of introspection about one’s life in the context of the faith each of us professes to live as we follow Jesus.
I find the uncertainty of our world to be like “desert times.” And while I will not share a litany of current events that I think add to that feeling, I do feel the gap between peace and strife is widening, individually and publicly. Lent seems to me a good time to look within to find that spirit of peace which comes from God, a “peace that passes all understanding,” (Philippians 4:7). And maybe during this Lenten time rather than living in lament it would be good to follow the Apostle Paul’s advice to the Philippians, as expressed by Eugene Peterson from the Message:
“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.” (Phil. 4:6)
Prayer in desert times is a good Lenten challenge, I think. And may our prayers during this Lenten time lead us to the blessings of peace.
****
Friends, on the 8th of February we will begin a project to remind ourselves of the histories of our churches. I will have in each Fellowship Hall a way to add what you know of the history and your history too, like family baptisms, weddings and notable faith journeys. This isn’t going to be a one-day event but will be available to edit and will be on display the month of February.
February 28th at the Rush United Methodist Church will be a district training day, “Informed to Transform 2006,” from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm. The theme is Back to Basics, with session topics: SPRC, Trustees, Stewardship/Finance, Lay Leader, and Dismantling Racism. If you would like to participate, speak with me or see the flyer, or register at: https://bit.ly/informedtotransform
Blessings,
David

JANUARY 2026
Pastoral letter:
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
First and foremost, let me express my gratitude for all the kindnesses and gifts extended to me during the Christmas Season. I have only been with you as an Interim Pastor for a couple of months, but you have all made me feel a valued member of both congregations and what a gift that has been to me. I believe the Holy Spirit is and has been moving through both churches and I feel confident that knowing that will guide and lead the churches into the future. As distressed and anxious as the world is around us, the very presence of Christ and the faithful response of disciples like you can only bring peace, hope, joy and love to those around you and who knows how far it will reach to the rest of the community and world. I’m sure your familiar with the image of a drop of water sending ripples when dripped into calm waters. Who know how far your ripples of faith will carry?
But where to begin? I asked you all to give me three descriptions of your church. My cursory look at the Macedon Center list found Welcoming and Friendly coming up the most. What a great place to start! And likewise the joy of being a worshipping community and welcoming seemed to lead the way at South Perinton. Just sharpening those skills of welcoming, friendliness and joyful worship in and outside of the Church can only make certain the Gospel will be a reflection of discipleship in both congregations.
Thank you for your friendly welcome to me and the joyful Spirit you touch me with. I am excited about the next six months as I am so grateful to God who has called us to be together for this time.
Blessings,
David

DECEMBER 2025
Pastoral letter:
Friends,
“For unto you is born this day….”
What day? Well of course we know this to mean Christmas Day. It has been that way for centuries and generations have celebrated that day through those centuries. The scripture goes to say: “In the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” I think Christmas asks more of us than just an observant celebration of Jesus’ birth on the 25th of December, it is also a reminder to attend to the day Jesus was born into your life and mine.
“For unto you is born this day….”
Do you remember the day that the Christ was born into your life? It could have been any month, maybe even mid-summer, or springtime or the fall. The birth could have come quietly as if growing into the understanding of a divine relationship interwoven into your life. It could have been a noisy realization or one so joyful that it led to tears. It may even have come after a loss trusting in the promised hope of a divine healing presence. Whatever, and however Jesus was born into our lives Christmas Day is a time to remember and reflect on that birth.
“For unto us is born this day….”
Just think that as we gather, especially to celebrate Christmas, that December 25th event, we bring our own stories of how Jesus was birthed into our lives, lives, and isn’t that proof that Jesus lives? As the church worships by decorating, singing, hearing the scripture and lighting candles of remembrance it is our common affirmation that Jesus was born and lives in the through his disciples, you and me. That is a message we can carry all year long, because Jesus was born into any of our lives and I know HE LIVES!
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 KJV
Christmas Blessings, David

Preschoolers in Need
Can you HELP?
The preschool is for 3- and 4-year-olds. Currently there are 175 students enrolled, but this is a transient population, so that number changes daily as does the students who make up that number. After speaking with Lisa Whitlow, the building principal, we identified the following needs – ALL DONATED ITEMS CAN BE NEW OR OLD! -kids don’t care! These are children in the Rochester City School District (RCSD).
Sue Parisi will be collecting any items at the South Perinton UMC. Items can be dropped off the 2nd and the 4th Monday of the month during their quilting time or one Saturday a month on Saturdays, when the Day Quilters are meeting at the church.
Any questions or concerns, please contact Sue Parisi 585-203-2139 or sueaparisi@icloud.com

NOVEMBER 2025
Pastoral letter:
Friends,
What a joy it is for me to be the Interim Pastor for the Macedon Center and South Perinton Churches. I do want to thank you all for the welcome I have received when I was “filling in” over the last few weeks. I especially want to give thanks for Pastor Rachel and the ministry for Jesus Christ she contributed over the last several years. Please continue to keep Rachel and her family in your prayers.
A very little about me. After forty-two years, I retired from full time ministry, and I am now a trained Intentional Interim minister, as well as a District Superintendent Associate for the Genesee Valley District. That simply means that we will be active in a process that will work with our District Superintendent, the Reverend Richelle Goff and the Upper New York cabinet to make the best possible appointment for the churches next spring.
My spouse, Marianne, is a registered nurse working for Rochester Regional Health. We have three daughters, two with spouses and two grandsons.
It is my plan to be at the Macedon Center Church, Tuesdays (10 am – 1pm) and Thursdays (11am – 3pm).
In this season of Thanksgiving, I am grateful for all of you and your commitment and love for Jesus the Christ. While there are no certainties about the future, laying our faith in God’s hands will get us where God needs each of us and our churches to be. And so with the hymn writer Henry Smith, I begin our journey together by “Giving thanks with a grateful heart.”
Blessings,
David Underwood,

Hi All!
The Fall Dinner is just around the corner. The dinner committee wants to say Thank you for all your efforts to make this dinner a success! Currently we are looking for all ticket proceeds to be turned into the church office by Sunday, Nov. 2. Thank you for your generous response. We will have some tickets available for sale after Sunday should anyone want them.
We have reached out to many businesses for possible donations. As of yet there has been no response.
The following are some suggestions for donations if you chose to do so:
Ziplock baggies (250) for the bread and the brownies
Cupcake liners (150) for the brownies
Sterno (or $) for the warming trays for the Ziti
$ for the containers for the Ziti- our most substantial cost after the Ziti.
To contain our costs we are using whatever is on hand first. That being said this Sunday we’ll be rolling the silverware after church if you want to help. I’ll be washing the silverware (plastic) this week, then leaving them to dry in the kitchen. Next week, I’ll do the same for the salad containers.
On Saturday, Nov. 10 the brownie mix, cupcake liners and the baggies will be available to pick up. We are asking that the brownies be cooked in cupcake tins using the liners for easy distribution. Each package makes 10 brownies. A sign-up sheet will be out this weekend, Nov. 1).
Thanks you,
Barb Petty

OCTOBER 2025
Pastoral letter:
Dear Beloved Church Family,
This past weekend at our church services, I announced that I am stepping away from Pastoral Ministry. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate my decision and shar it with anyone who may have missed the initial announcement.
I have spent a great deal of time in prayer and discernment over the last few weeks and feel that God is leading me to be more fully present and focused on my family. As my kids get older, we have had the sober realization that we only have so much time left with them before they spread their wings and take off on their own. While I have found much purpose and fulfillment in Pastoral Ministry, it is also a calling that requires a great deal from those who answer the call. I have seen over the last few months that the demands and rigors of Pastoral Ministry no longer align with my call to be the Mom God created me to be. And so, for this season, I am stepping away from Pastoral Ministry. I hope that one day, down the road, I will be able to step back into serving God’s kingdom as a pastor and preacher. For now, I am stepping forward with confidence into what God has next for me.
This has not been an easy decision, as serving as your pastor has been one of the greatest privileges and joys of my life’s journey and faith. Together we have worshipped, prayed, laughed, wept, grown, and worked for God’s kingdom. I will carry the memories of this time with me always. My love for our churches and our congregations will always remain, and I will continue to hold you all in prayer, as I hope you will for me. I trust that God, who has begun a good work among you, will continue to guide and bless you as you move into your future with hope.
While I will miss many things about our churches (Bible Studies, chosen groups, our incredible outreach ministries, and more), I think I will miss our kids the most. It has been such a privilege and blessing to watch them grow in life and faith. It has been a joy to come alongside them and help them in their discipleship journeys. Our churches have some truly remarkable children. I hope they know how great they are; they are all such beautiful souls, each in their own way. I hope that if you’re a parent reading this, you will pass that message along to your kids. I loved our time together at VBS, Confirmation Classes, Game Nights, and Campfires.
As I look to the future with hope and step with confidence into what God has next, I have been discerning where I can best serve God. I want to share with you that after reflection and prayer, I have decided to use my gifts and skills to work with youth going forward. Working with our kids here has shown me the depth of my heart for kids and the joy it brings me to be a part of their faith formation. As a result, I will be seeking opportunities to serve God’s kingdom in this season by serving the youth. I want to thank our kids ad youth for being a part of that discernment – for showing me how much I love working with kids.
This coming weekend, October 4th and October 5th, will be my last weekend with you. I hope you will come and celebrate the work that God has done these last few years, because God has been at work, and that is a beautiful thing.
Thank you for your love and encouragement these last few years. I also want to express my gratitude for being a part of my journey and for partnering with me as we’ve served God. It has been a blessing, and I hope it has been the same or you
With Love and Fondness,
Pastor Rachel

Our FALL DINNER is fast approaching (Saturday, November 15)! We have had 7 dedicated people who have been working through our hurdles to co-ordinate this dinner. We have been challenged by the facts that our church has an aging population, we haven’t put on a dinner since the pandemic and several of our core volunteers have moved, can no longer volunteer or are now simply in our memories.
We would have a caterer make the main course leaving easier items for us to put together. We have enlisted a highly recommended chef, who is delighted to do this for us. We will have drive-thru/take-out only.
We would have a caterer make the main course leaving easier items for us to put together. We have enlisted a highly recommended chef, who id delighted to do this for us.
As we are learning from the past and also want to try foods that today’s active people would appreciate, we have made changes to the menu and the timing. As a result, we are offering a main course of baked Ziti and a meatball. I think of it as a light version of lasagna. The sides will be 2 slices of Italian bread, salad and a brownie for dessert. The baked Ziti was an idea put forward by a former chef and was one of the top choices from the poll collected from people at the Lumberjack Festival. Our pricing is $14 per serving.
Our caterer will make a minimum of 125 up to 500 servings. Our challenge is how many can we sell. We will be advertising Facebook, we advertised at the Lumberjack Festival, we will have the use of the lighted sign in front of the parking lot from Oct. 9 on, we will have 8 ½ x 11 flyers to distribute and we will have signs to put up on corners., etc. We believe that the best sales will be by the people of our church. We are asking that each of us sell five (or more) tickets to your friends, family, work associates, neighbors, etc. We will also be selling tickets through the church office. Our deadline for ticket sales is Nov. 4. All tickets are presale.
Once again we have the wonderful opportunity to work with our fellow church-goers. We may be working but most of us find this to be a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other better. We are trusting that those that are able, will volunteer. Considering our population, we will have slots 1-3 pm and slots 4-6 pm, where the workers will be seated. We will have people directing the traffic and people going from the assembly area to the pickup door. We are hoping that our Youth will volunteer to help as we will need some runners from the kitchen to the Bell room where we will assemble the dinners. We are also looking for people who would be willing to deliver dinners, ie to former church members who no longer drive.
The last item to bring before you is that this is a fundraiser for our church. The destination for the funds raised is our Youth Programs. Our kids are our future. We want to support them as best we can.

AUGUST 2025
Pastoral letter:
Greetings Siblings in Faith,
I hope you’ve had the chance this summer to slow down a little bit. I write this month’s newsletter from Lancaster, PA. My family is taking 5 days to slow down together, to enjoy the simple things in life, to disconnect, and to relish in each other’s company.
And this is the prefect place to do it – amidst the horse and buggy, Amish Lifestyle. We have done some fun things, have eaten way too much yummy food, and have more adventures on the docket. We have also had some time at our Airbnb, nestled between farmlands, to just be. To read a book, take a nap, chat on the porch, just be. And that is just as much a blessing as the really cool adventures we’ve been on.
I was reading my devotional this morning and it was all about slowing down and really experiencing life. And I thought to myself how fitting it was that I was reading that today.
The author of devotional, talking about a very different kind of vacation than ours, says, ”We don’t always see the dolphins swimming in the ocean, but we know they are out there. Sometimes the dolphins are jumping and playing around in the waves right in front of us, but we miss seeing them because we aren’t looking for them. Sometimes we are looking in the opposite direction, and sometimes we are too busy scrolling on our phone to see the dolphin show right in front of us.”
She goes on to talk about how God’s presence is like that sometimes. God is right there in front of us but our faces are buried in our phones or we are just too busy to notice. Sometimes we are desperately searching for some deep connection with God when what we really need to do is slow down, put the phone away, and be..
This week in Lancaster, PA I am feeling God’s presence in the animals I’ve met, the family time around the table, the late night conversations with Dan, and the adventures we are having.
Life get busy and complicated and I think we all need to take breaks and disconnect from time to time because its in those moments that God’s presence is so easy to see and feel.
I pray that if you haven’t experienced that yet this summer that you would take some time to intentionally disconnect. Sometimes its hard to do it but I promise it’s worth it. And when you’ve had a cool “God moment” trying this out, come tell me, I can’t wait to hear about it!
Blessings,
Pastor Rachel

Invitation to Bring Crafting and Community Together
My name is Susan Hayden, founder of Ravnsong Crafts, and I am writing to share a heartfelt invitation. I am not part of your congregation, but I am part of a Christian family and part of your community. I offer creative, hands-on craft classes that help bring people together in a spirit of fellowship, expression, and joy.
My background is in education. I retired from teaching after 30 years.
These classes are perfect for all skill levels and can be hosted at my home studio or your church location, available as group gatherings or one-on-one sessions. I specialize in a variety of crafts including wreath making, jewelry creations, seasonal décor, scrapbooking, etc. and each class is designed to be relaxing, fun, and meaningful. And the best one of all is the one that sits in your heart that we haven’t even thought about yet.
Crafting creates a space for connection. Whether for your women’s ministry, youth, seniors, homeschoolers, or outreach efforts, these workshops can provide a unique and refreshing experience that brings hearts and hands together.
If this sounds like something your church might enjoy, I’d love to speak with you about a one-time event, a seasonal worship, or a recurring class. I can provide materials, samples, and flexible scheduling.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to explore possibilities.
With warmest regards,
Susan Hayden

JULY 2025
Pastoral letter:
Siblings in Christ,
As we step into the heart and heat of summer, July greets us with sunshine, growth, and the gentle reminder that as we enter summer, or as I call it “farm stand” and “garden season,” God’s creation is constantly unfolding around us.
Psalm 74:17 says, “You have set all the borders of the earth; You have made summer and winter.” This simple yet powerful verse reminds us that each season, including the one we’re in now, is a gift from God. Summer is more than a time for vacations and cookouts—it’s a spiritual season of growth, renewal, and joy.
Just as plants flourish under the sun, this season can be one where our faith blossoms. Take time to nourish your relationship with God. Whether through prayer in the quiet of the morning, reading scripture under the shade of a tree, or serving others with a generous heart, there are countless ways to grow spiritually this summer.
July is also filled with opportunities to gather as a church family. Don’t miss out on our upcoming events (listed below, in our church calendar), whether it’s joining in on our Summer Read, watching “The Chosen” together, Vacation Bible School, Blessing of the Pets, our Youth Campfires, and more. A lot is going on in our church this month! These moments are more than activities—they’re chances to nourish our relationships with God and each other!
This July, let’s embrace the season with joy, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to walk in faith. May your days be filled with laughter, love, and moments that remind you of God’s faithful presence.
With love in Christ,
Pastor Rachel

JUNE 2025
Pastoral letter:
Dear Family of Love,
As I contemplate what to write about for our newsletter cover page this month, I am thinking about spiritual disciplines. Spiritual disciplines are those things we do to help us grow in our spiritual lives and strengthen our relationships with God. Things that tend to make the list are prayer, journaling, worship, fellowship, Bible study, small groups, and daily devotionals.
I’ll admit there are certain disciplines I could probably work on. For example, I have never been good at establishing a good habit of daily devotionals. I’ll buy a book and get bored 2 weeks in, or I’ll set aside a particular block each day, but then something comes up, and eventually, I get out of the habit. The thing is, I love getting into God’s word every day. In fact, theological and philosophical reflections and thoughts are part of my “mode of operation.” But setting aside time to dive into scripture intentionally, with a guide, does not come naturally. As a result, I tend to hop around from resource to resource, and my habits are irregular at best. But every now and then, I come across a good resource, like the ReadScripture App from the Bible Project (which I highly recommend). Recently, I found that the United Church of Christ has an online resource similar in taste to our “Upper Room” devotionals, and the reflection for today made an impression on me.
Rev. Jennifer Garrison, author, spiritual director, and pastor, writes, “One thing my generation (X0 abhors more than anything is sentimentality. We are a sarcastic people, and anything that smacks of precious earnestness is, at best, mocked and at worst shut down altogether…(But) hear me out when I tell you that the mid-century poem about footprints, the one shellacked onto a piece of burnt wood and hanging in your grandma’s TV room, is actually worth considering. The idea that Christ is with you in the hardest times is not just memeable corn. It’s an expression of faith so deep that it transcends all of our protective irony.”
I’m not Gen X, but I know more than once, I have rolled my eyes at that corny poem prominently displayed in churches, homes, and Christian businesses. However, as I’ve gotten older (I’m a whopping 36 years old now, lol) and as I’ve navigated more “hurdles” in life, I see the beauty in the words.
If somehow you made it through the 90s without being exposed to the “Footprints in the Sand” poem, here it is:
One night, I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
Especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
There was only one set of footprints.
This really troubles me, so I asked the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you
You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
There was only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.”
There is a profound reality in the idea that, as we reflect on our lives, we can see the moments when God walked alongside us. Even more profound is looking back at our trials in life and seeing that when we were too weak to carry on, God carried us through.
Many of us have seen tough times – some of us recently. My encouragement, comfort, and hope for you, if you find yourself in a difficult season, is that in your weakest, most vulnerable moments, God is with you, always. God is strong when we are weak and will carry us through whatever troubles we face. That looks different for different people, but it is still true. God is present with us in the depths of despair and at the heights of joy.
Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be frightened; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your Goad will be with you wherever you go.”
Isaiah 41:10 says, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Matthew 28:20 says, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Let these words of scripture be a comfort and a hope to you – whether you find yourself in a trial right now or not. God is always with you – through everything. In that, there is great comfort and hope.
Blessings,
Pastor Rachel

NOTE OF THANKS
THANK YOU to everyone who has given to the Preschoolers in Need Project.
Some of the blankets the kids use for naps and some go home with the children when there is a need. The books are being used by the teachers, some go in the main office on a bookshelf that the kids can take home. All the craft items are mostly in the classroom but the teachers and staff can give them to the kids to take home if needed.

Information about the School:
This preschool is part of the Rochester School system, in a very poor area. There are 175 families that have preschool children that do not have permanent homes in Rochester. This school is helping some of these children. My partner in this project is Amy Lyle a retired teacher. Other organizations that are helping are both Macedon Center & S. Perinton Church, Perinton Quilt Guild, Irondequoit Quilt Guild and the quilt days we also have at S. Perinton Church. I really can’t thank you enough for everything!
Amy and I never thought we could help this much just collecting items to pass on. A true blessing for so many.
APRIL 2025
Pastoral letter:
Greetings Church Family,
I have used the same daily devotional book for the past few Lenten seasons to guide me through my reflections. I cherish the insight of Henri Nouwen in his book “Show Me the Way.” It is fascinating that even though this is my third or fourth season using this book, I am still finding new nuggets of truth and inspiration. I was reading today’s entry when something struck me. Henri was talking about how crucial spiritual discipline is to the life of faith. He suggests that through various spiritual disciplines, we open ourselves up to hearing the voice of God so that we might faithfully follow. None of this was new to me – it probably isn’t to you either.
What was new was the realization that I had gotten lazy in my spiritual disciplines. And it wasn’t a decision I made to put them aside. I wasn’t even aware that it was happening. But slowly, over time, that laziness crept in. It starts small and gradually builds until, like me, you realize that you have gotten lazy in your spiritual attentiveness and habits.
The words that grabbed my attention were this: “It is clear that we are usually surrounded by so much inner and outer noise that it is hard to truly hear our God when he is speaking to us. We have often become deaf, unable to know when God calls us and unable to understand in which direction he calls us.”
The busyness of life surrounds us and drowns out the voice of God. It happens in little ways, like when you’re too busy to do your daily devotionals today, so you decide to do two tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes, and you’re still busy, so you make another excuse until it’s been many days since you’ve picked up your devotional. That’s my story – maybe yours is different. But the point is that things happen in life that distract, detract, and pull us away from our spiritual habits. It happens a little at a time. Then, eventually, one day, we realize that we have compromised a little too much – the busyness of life has crowded God out. We don’t make time for God in our day, and we become lazy in our spiritual habits.
It is tough to hear God’s voice and follow faithfully where God is calling us when we aren’t taking time to shut out the world’s noise and listen. When we don’t make time for prayer, serving, reading our Bibles, or attending worship, to name a few important spiritual disciplines, we can’t cut through the noise of life to hear the most important voice.
So, as we have come to roughly the halfway point of Lent, I hope you’ll join me in renewing our vigor for spiritual disciplines. Let us set aside the noise of the world and tap into the voice of God.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Rachel

MARCH 2025
Pastoral letter:
“The Lord is my Shepherd…”
Greetings Siblings in Christ,
March is here, and we are heading into the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday, which falls on March 5th this year, begins Lent, the 40-day journey from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. This season of reflection and introspection prepares us for the grief of Good Friday, the hopelessness of Black Saturday, and the joy of Easter Sunday.
As we contemplate our faith and make this journey together, we will also gather to reflect on Scripture. Our annual Lenten Bible Study will begin March 18th, and we will use the book “A Shepherd Loos at Psalm 23” to guide us through our meditation on God’s inspired word.
Author W. Phillip Keller will guide us through a reflection on Psalm 23, helping us to approach it with new eyes. Keller aptly points out that the Bible was written for and by people guided by God’s spirit in a culture and a time very different from our own. He says the people of biblical times were “simple, nomadic folk familiar with nature and the outdoor life of the countryside about them (9).” Today, we live a very different life. We largely live in urban or suburban settings, and even those among us who live in the rural country live in human-made environments. Because we live in such a different world, Keller suggests we often miss the message and nuance of scripture because the images and references vastly differ from our own.
Keller grew up and lived in East Africa for a time before leaving to travel the world. In East Africa, Keller was “surrounded by simple native herders whose customs closely resembled those of their counterparts in the Middle East (11).” Keller also made a living as a sheep owner and rancher before becoming a pastor.
Keller offers his unique insight into the imagery of the Old Testament, specifically Psalm 23. He perhaps understands well what David had in mind when he wrote some of his most famous psalms. Keller hope that by exploring Psalm 23 through the eyes of a shepherd and pastor, we will gain a new appreciation for “our Savior and his sheep” and that out of this study, there will emerge a “growing admiration and affection for the Great Shepherd (of our) souls (12).”
I hope you will join us on this journey as we reflect on scripture and our faith journeys this Lenten season!
Blessings and Love,
Pastor Rachel
